acanthus mollis

Plant Description   Memorialized in marble at the top of Corinthian columns, 2-foot long, deeply lobed and glossy leaves of this Mediterranean native create striking scenes in gardens. Clumps expand to 3 feet high and wide and send up even taller flower stalks lined with white, rose or purplish flowers tucked under greenish bracts. Spreads by tough underground stems and is difficult to eradicate once established. Although well suited to dry shade, top growth dies back with no summer water and dormancy sets in until rains prompt lush regrowth in fall.
