A tough, midsize shrub common along country roads but useful in gardens when lower branches are pruned up and dead wood removed. In fall, tiny white flowers cover twiggy branchlets cloaked with small, toothed leaves. Female plants produce fluffy fruits considered a nuisance. Tolerates moderate summer water. ‘Twin Peaks’ and ‘Pigeon Point’ need hard pruning in January to maintain low, compact form.
