Blackberries are often planted during the dormant season, mainly December and January, but potted vines can also be planted in spring or summer. Dig a planting hole just large enough to accommodate the roots, prune off any damaged root parts, and spread the roots in the planting hole if planting bare root plants. Set the plant at about the same depth it was in the nursery. Cover the roots with soil and press firmly to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly to settle the soil. After planting, cover the soil with a good mulch, such as wood chips. Space all blackberry cultivars 3 to 4 feet apart in the row, and 8 to 10 feet between rows. Cut the canes on newly set plants to 6 inches at planting time.
