Many varieties from groundcovers to upright shrubs; most are slow-growing but long-lived. Foliage varies from bluish to dark green with short needles or overlapping scales. Occasionally prune out dead wood underneath, which poses a fire hazard. Roots will rot in heavy, wet soil. Inland, provide partial shade to reduce need for summer irrigation.
