Mahonia aquifolium

Plant Description

Tough, leathery and very prickly dark green foliage is similar to holly leaves. Butter yellow flowers in spikes or loose clusters produce mostly blue fruits relished by birds. Some species form dense thickets that sprout from underground runners; others spread slowly or not at all. Select spreading standard or dwarf forms or an unbranched species such as M. lomariifolia for its upright architectural profile.
