What is African American 5 a Day?

The CaliforniaAfrican American 5 a Day Campaign, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Stamp Program, is designed to improve the health of the low-income African American community by providing education, advocacy, and policy development about healthy eating and physical activity. Through the work of 16 Faith-based Community Projects and Regional Nutrition Network Lead Agencies, the Campaign provides services to the nearly 40 percent of African Americans in California who are low-income.

Campaign Mission

To encourage the improvement of health by empowering the African American community through education, advocacy, and policy development that promotes the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity.Faith-based Community Projects throughout the state receive funding to establish and expand health ministries that promote fruit and vegetable consumption and physical activity messages through health fairs, farmers' markets, nutrition classes, supermarkets, and the media. In addition, the Campaign's agencies spearhead regional policy and systems changes on nutrition and physical activity through their work with media outlets, grocery stores, and policymakers. A formal program evaluation revealed that the Campaign is currently in 4 of the top 5 preferred delivery channels for the African American community (grocery stores, mass media, festivals, and churches).
