Fresno County has a varied climate ranging from hot, dry areas on the western side of the county to cooler foothill areas in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Because gardening is much different in the foothills, we have created these pages to help those who live where there is an occasional dusting of snow.
Techniques like using walls of water (below) are discussed by foothills residents and Master Gardeners, Ray and Ruth Conner in their series "Living in the Foothills" (files are in pdf format)
Volume I, Issue I. Planting Cistus under Oaks
Volume I, Issue II. Planting Tomatoes in Foothill Gardens
Volume I, Issue III. Using Cold Frames
Volume I, Issue IV. Ground Squirrels
Volume I, Issue V. Keeping Animals Out of Your Garden

Using walls of water around tomato plants can protect them from frost.
