What is a Master Gardener?

San Mateo and San FranciscoCounties were some of the last counties (out of 43 counties) to get on the band wagon in the Master Gardener Program in California. We have been active since 2006 and now have over 100 volunteers. All of our volunteers have completed the University of California Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program.

We are a dedicated, trained group of volunteers with a shared love of gardening and horticulture. Through community service and educational outreach, we provide home gardeners and community organizations the knowledge and skills to create a healthy environment for the counties. Since 2006, we Master Gardeners have worked as non-paid staff members of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), answering public inquiries and providing information on all areas of plant health and gardening practices.
